During the last Art Loop, we had our first formal Open House at our new office here at 1111 Adams Street. It was a beautifully warm Summer evening and the culmination of years of work to create a space that can serve as the home of Whitelabel now and into the future.

We were very measured and intentional with the opening of our headquarters, purposefully choosing Adams Street, in the “Uptown” part of downtown.  We wanted to be part of an eclectic neighborhood that is well-loved and supported by the arts community, a fun place for our employees and clients to visit and somewhere we could have an impact, helping lend a hand to it’s resurgence. It’s an up and coming part of Toledo, a street that aspires to be more, which is really an embodiment of Toledo itself, a place that peaked nearly a century ago but has a fighting spirit and a motivated next generation. It also didn’t hurt that this neighborhood is littered with incredibly beautiful old buildings, in desperate need of some love, reimagination and a whole lot of money.

As for the space itself, it’s important to note that Whitelabel is largely a remote first company, more on that in a future post. In any case, designing an office for a remote first company created some really fun opportunities. We aimed to build a flexible, comfortable, and community driven space. Despite the mounting evidence that open concept can be counter productive, it is perfect for our case, since the days we use the office are generally collaborative in nature. As such, our focus and Pinterest inspiration was largely driven by upscale New York City lofts. Our musts were abundant natural light, dramatic windows, comfortable seating and most importantly, a full kitchen! We knew that much of what we do here would involve client entertainment, hackathons, community events and team building activities. We also wanted to build a space that would make people want to come to the office. While we love and embrace remote, we tremendously value the interpersonal relationships that are borne out of spending time together, sharing a meal, having a coffee or beer and spending quality time getting to know one another.
